Laboratory Safety Evaluation Program
Laboratory safety evaluations provide an opportunity to assist departments, faculty, staff and students to identify and correct potential health and safety hazards in research and teaching laboratories. Laboratory safety evaluations are conducted annually by EH&S personnel to ensure that each laboratory conforms with the safe and healthy work conditions and practices as identified in in the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP), UCR's Chemical Hygiene Plan, federal and state regulations, standards and UC policies.

In most cases, your EH&S Building Representative will reach out directly to the PI and lab delegates to initiate the Laboratory Safety Evaluation process and provide direct links to schedule an appointment. You can also request a laboratory safety evaluation using our appointment software by selecting the evaluator associated with your main lab building.
The following instructions will be provided to schedule the appointment:
- Select a date and time for the in-person visit that works best for your lab. It can be helpful to have a delegate available to answer questions, discuss the type of work that occurs in your laboratory, and ask any EH&S/safety questions your laboratory might have.
- Enter the requested information about the location of items such as your First Aid Kit and Lab Safety Manual.
- Select “Confirm booking” to book your appointment.
Once your booking is confirmed, we will review some of the administrative items for your laboratory, such as LHAT and training status, and send you a report so that you have time to make any corrections as needed before the evaluation. Any training or administrative corrections made before the visit will not show as deficiencies on the final report.
Any visits will be made in compliance with campus COVID restrictions and best practices. If we need to reschedule to a later date based on campus condition or laboratory health and safety, please reach out to your evaluator.

Steps to an Effective Laboratory Safety Evaluation

Perform a workplace hazard assessment using the Laboratory Hazard Assessment (LHAT)

Complete all required training courses

Ensure all lab personnel wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance to lab hazard assessment and UCOP Policy

Review/Update/Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Update chemical inventory for each assigned location using UC Chemicals

Update Emergency placard using RSS Chemicals

Follow the link to login to RSS Chemicals.

Select Inventory Summary from the menu.

Scroll down to Door Hazard Signs (found under Sublocations).

Choose the room you want to print a placard for. Review the contact information provided for accuracy. If the room has multiple inventories associated with it, these will all be considered when generating the GHS diamond.

If contact information needs to be updated, click the three dots on the bottom right and choose "Edit."

Save any changes made, click the three dots on the bottom right and choose "Save PDF" to print.

Door Hazard Signs MUST be printed in color.

Advertise safety in the laboratory by posting laboratory safety rules, hazard warning signs and the emergency poster.

Provide access to Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Review the laboratory evaluation checklist

Dispose of hazardous waste properly by accessing the Waste Accumulation Storage Tracking (WASTe) system
Guide for Completing Training in a Laboratory Setting
- Review and complete the Laboratory Site Specific Training Checklist for each lab personnel.
- Identify and complete additional required training based on hazards present in the laboratory.
- Review the Laboratory Safety Manual, which include the Injury & Illness Prevention Plan, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), etc.
