What is Occupational Health?

Occupational Health is a field focused on protecting employees from workplace hazards and occupational risks. It supports injury and illness prevention, promotes worker well-being, and helps coordinate care related to work-related exposures and injuries. 

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (link opens in a new tab), occupational health is an area of public health that promotes and maintains the highest degree of physical, mental, and social well-being of workers in all occupations. 

Objectives

The objectives of Occupational Health include:  

  • Promoting and maintaining workers' health and working capacity.
  • Improving working conditions and the work environment to support safety and health.
  • Supporting workplace organization and culture that reflect effective management systems, personnel practices, worker participation, and quality improvement related to occupational safety and health.
  • Integrating multiple disciplines, including occupational medicine, nursing, ergonomics, psychology, industrial hygiene, safety, and related fields.
